They Speak In Silence

They Speak In Silence

You know a truth untold
Under a swollen mouth
Eyes blue and closed, battered,
Not saying but how could you?
A body barely standing
The wind holds up and shreds
Not quite broken bones
Still breathing heads lolling
We thought sleep would hold us
But dreams are awake
Bad scenes, rape, gun butts,
A herd of real people unheard
Blood clotting the sad lips
And America drives by
Hiding in double tint windows
Eyes gleefully open
Cell phones chirping happy
A picture to look away from
With blood still on the inside
Safe, if you call it that
Ignorant as if by accident
Worried about a simple life-
Bills, new tires, landscape,
The life to be not found yet
Then the sun comes up again
Just like everywhere
Fighting so hard to stay unaware
But the bruises don't land
They fly around and we can look
Away or toward-Freedom
That holy untruth
A choice to remain aloof
The work it takes each day to hide
The bleeding people amid debris
Of greed
So bleed America
A call is ringing over and over
Go back to sleep.
